Throwback Uniforms: Pittsburgh Steelers (1962)

Here is a throwback throwback. Back in 2007, the Pittsburgh Steelers celebrated the 75th anniversary of the franchise by exhuming uniforms that they hadn't worn since 1962. The response to the uniforms was positive enough that the Steelers broke out the uniforms again in 2008 in a game against the New York Giants.
It was an elite clash to say the least, as the reigning NFL champion Giants took on the team that would win the Super Bowl that year. New York won the battle of the best in a score of 21-14. But who won the uniform battle? Did the Steelers duds really deserve a second year of run or were they the hideous beyond all human comprehension? The shocking answer lies after the jump...

Throwback Uniforms: Nebraska Cornhuskers (1962)

On September 26, 2009, the University of Nebraska celebrated their 300th consecutive sellout at Memorial Stadium, extending what had already been an NCAA record. Their opponent on this important date: the Lousiana-Lafayette Rajin' Cajuns (a team in desperate need of an acronym). Nebraska knew months in advance that this game would be No. 300, so they commemorated the achievement by wearing throwback uniforms from 1962 -- the year the streak first began.
But could the Rajin' Cajuns spoil the Cornhuskers' fun and knock off the 25th best team in the country? Read on!! (The answer was no by the way)

Throwback Uniforms: Oilers and Jets (1962)
In Week 3 of the NFL season, the 2-0 New York Jets met up with the 0-2 Tennessee Titans. As a part of the AFL Legacy program, both teams wore one of their classic jerseys from back in the day. The Titans wore a uniform from when they were the Houston Oilers, and the Jets wore a uniform from back when they were the New York Titans. CBS' announcing crew had originally been told to address the teams by their former names, which would have been confusing since both teams were at one point the Titans. As such, Greg Gumbel and Dan Dierdorf just called them by their current names -- a wise choice.
I already covered the home blue uniforms that the Oilers wore from that era -- now we see how the white ones stack up. Who had the better garb: the old Titans or the current Titans? My answer will probably surprise you...

Throwback Uniforms: Toronto Blue Jays (1992)

For a Friday night game against the L.A. Angels, the Toronto Blue Jays sported their classic uniforms from the 1992 and 1993 seasons, the years they won the World Series. A few members of those classic teams were on hand to watch the modern Jays beat the Angels, 5-4.
1993 was a long time ago, and the Jays are no longer a threat to win a title. But how well do their jerseys stack up? Will my completely arbitrary grading scale be kind to these powder blue uniforms? Find out after the jump.

Throwback Uniforms: A's and White Sox (1929)

On August 16th, the Oakland Athletics celebrated the 80th anniversary of the 1929 Philadelphia Athletics, who won the World Series, by dressing up in their old uniforms from the '29 season. $18 outfield tickets were dropped to $9.29, $30 box seats were dropped to $19.29, and 10,000 fans walked away with retro A's jerseys. A's manager Bob Geren came out in a suit and tie, a nod to the legendary skipper of the 1929 team, Connie Mack. There was also a pregame parade of Model A cars, music was played from that era, and the public address announcer called the game from an old-time microphone near the playing field.
The Chicago White Sox, who were the A's opponents that day, even played along by wearing their duds from the '29 season. Overall, the amount of attention the Athletics put into the promotion was terrific, worthy of an A+. But what about those A's and Sox uniforms? Were they good enough to be worn on a regular basis or should they have been left in the past? Find out after the jump...

Throwback Uniforms: Colorado Buffaloes (1930)

On September 19, 2009, the Colorado Buffaloes donned uniforms from the 1930's in their game against Wyoming. Why? Because the city of Colorado had two running backs in the 1930's who led the nation in rushing, and because 2009 is the 150th anniversary -- or the sesquicentennial -- of the city of Boulder, where the University of Colorado is located. Why exactly did they choose 80 year-old outfits to honor the 150th birthday of the city? Uh... hmm... meh, whatever.
The point is that Colorado crushed Wymong, 24-0, and it was all (not really) thanks to the jerseys. So, should the replica jerseys stay for good, or should they have been left in the past? Find out after the jump...

Throwback Uniforms: Oregon Ducks (1996)

In the fourth week of the college football season, the Oregon Ducks donned their uniforms from the 1996 to 1998 seasons in the hope of upsetting No. 6 California. Not only did they beat California, they emasculated them with a 42-3 beatdown. The result was so stunning, so unpredictable -- even for a quality Pac-10 team like Oregon -- that everyone was thinking the same thing: it had to be the uniforms.
But was it?

Throwback Uniforms: Atlanta Falcons (1966)

In Week 2, the Atlanta Falcons defeated the Carolina Panthers, 28-20, to move to 2-0 on the young season. Not only did they win in the scoreboard department, the Falcons managed to look pretty sweet in the process, as they donned uniforms from their inaugural season in 1966. Of all the throwback NFL uniforms worn in 2009 -- and there were a lot thanks to the AFL's 50th anniversary -- this beauty was one of the best.
