Off-topic: Transformers-Nascar ad
Okay, this has absolutely nothing to do with history. But I saw an ESPN ad the other day that I found so stupid that I feel compelled to talk about it.
The ad is for the Nascar Banking 500, and it's a tie-in to the new Transformers movie. I couldn't find video of the ad, so here's a transcript of what the commercial said.
On October 17th, the battle between good and evil will be settled on the racetrack in Charlotte. Ryan Newman is Optimus Prime. Jeff Gordon is Megatron. Visit ESPN.com and search keyword "Transformers" to choose your side. And enter to win a V.I.P. trip to Homestead Miami Speedway. The biggest movie of the year meets the baddest race of the fall. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Own it October 20th on DVD and Blu-Ray. NASCAR Banking 500 at Lowe's Motor Speedway. October 17th on ABC.
First of all: Transformers 2? Couldn't ESPN find a better tie-in than that? I mean, I know they both have to do with cars, but come on. Herby The Love Bug was a better movie than Transformers 2.
Secondly, the line "Jeff Gordon is Megatron" just kills me. I think it would've been cooler had they gone all the way with it: "Jeff Gordon is godless killing machine whose one purpose is to eradicate the human species. Ryan Newman has been sent from the heavens to free humanity from this abomination of life. The fate of the world will be decided on Homestead Miami Speedway on October 17th. Will Ryan Newman prevent the apocalypse, or will Jeff Gordon succeed in harvesting our organs for his mechanical minions? Find out on ABC."
